History of Holt

The Yellow River, which flows through Holt, empties Florida's highest point and is inundated by almost one hundred smaller creeks and streams, including the Shoal River itself. The source of the Yellow River is located in Conecuh National Forest in southern Alabama and it ends within Eglin Air Force Base. The Yellow River flows swiftly through a most-unsettled area, travelling over fifty miles, providing touring, canoeing, and camping opportunities. The waters of the Yellow River are not as crystal-clear as other streams in Blackwater Forest because of the tan-colored sand that lines the bottom resulting in a yellow-hued water (hence its name). The presence of abundant water-dwelling vegetation also means the presence of abundant fish, as well as water-birds, turtles, and alligators. Non-aquatic wildlife drawn to the river include raccoons, turkeys, bobcats, and deer, as well as an active beaver population with natural dams up and down the waterway. Many trees line the Yellow River, including willow, spruce pine, and river birch. Flowering vines frequently weave themselves among the trees' limbs.
